Recently Deleted photos on iPhone, explained

On iPhone, delete isn’t quite delete. The photo moves to Recently Deleted and waits 30 days. You can bring it back anytime in that window, which helps when you’re deleting fast. It’s also why storage barely budges right after a cleanup. I learned that the hard way after a long session in Photos and a Settings screen that hadn’t changed.

What happens when you delete a photo

The photo goes to Recently Deleted. It stays 30 days, then iOS removes it for good. Same behavior in the Photos app or in anything that uses your library, including Swipico.

Where to find it

Open Photos → Collections, scroll to Utilities, tap Recently Deleted. Since iOS 16 the album is locked, so you’ll need Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. That keeps a stranger from browsing what you threw away.

How to recover a photo

In Recently Deleted, tap Select, choose the photos, tap Recover. They return to the library where they were.

How to delete permanently

Tap Delete All, or select photos and tap Delete. No undo after that.

Does Recently Deleted use storage?

On the iPhone, yes. Until a photo is gone for good, it still counts against local storage. Emptying the album is what actually frees space. iCloud treats it differently: Apple says items in Recently Deleted don’t count toward iCloud storage. I still empty the album when I’m sure. I care about space on the phone, not just in the cloud.
